EN45545-2 FIRE SAFE COMPLIANT.

Historically, DMU train fleets have suffered with low engine power and ‘returning to idle’ (RTI) issues during the Spring and Summer months.

original fixed displacement fan pump fitted to the legacy 15X fleets, further exacerbates this problem as the fan speed is controlled by engine speed, so slow uphill climbs or station stops, does not allow temperature-controlled fan speeds, to maintain cooling efficiency.

The increase in UK ambient temperatures will continually impact passenger rolling stock engine cooling systems, as they fall outside of design parameters.

The reverse pitch fan solves this issue.

The blades of the reverse pitch fan rotate on their own axis to change the pitch and reverse through the cross position; this guarantees the air will always be increased and in the optimum position to produce maximum air flow when in both cooling and cleaning modes.

Maximum performance for every machine

Flex-Tips

Fans have one problem in common:the blades need to be positioned at a certain distance from the shroud to function properly. The turbulence generated in that area increases the resistance for the fan.

However, this distance can be minimized by using our Flex-Tips. The flexible blade extensions, made from high-performance plastic, automatically adjust to fit any shroud. This leads to fuel savings, enhanced performance, and reduced noise.

Thermal actuators

The thermal actuators ensure the blade angle is adjusted as needed. The wax-filled components react to differences in temperature.
In a fixed temperature range, the wax expands, moving a small piston that adjusts the angle of attack of the blade from flat to steep.

All blades are connected via a single piston to ensure synchronized movement.

Customised blade sizes

The Cleanfix reversible fan is known for
its versatility and different blade sizes,
making it suitable for use in agriculture,
construction, waste management, forestry,
and rail transport. It fits practically every
machine, optimizing flexibility, saving time,
and boosting efficiency – from small to
large machines.

HOW IT WORKS. legacy DMU fleets (15X/16X).

The Cleanfix reverse pitch fan comes in both pneumatic and hydraulic variants with the hydraulic version benefiting from a patented smart-seal system.

CLEANFIX SMART-SEAL-SYSTEM (PATENTED).

This smart-seal-system ensures maximum operating safety and reliability through the new integrated leakage oil recirculation - both for the piston seal as well as for the rotary intake.

STANDARD CONTROL
The blades are reversed by tapping into the existing vehicle Air or Hydraulic supply.

A Cleanfix electronic timer is connected to the LSR (low speed replay), 24v DC and set to an adjustable range of automated cleaning cycle intervals.

The Timer solenoid is energised on zero countdown, opening air supply or Hydraulic supply to the individual fan pistons, rotating the fan pitch to the cleaning mode, which can be achieved regardless of existing cooling fan speeds. The blades return after a 10 second cleaning cycle, back to cooling mode, through spring force strong enough to overcome any residual pressure or rotational load.

A new Hydrostatic Fan Variable displacement pump (VDP) is exchanged for the  existing Fan fixed displacement pump, with the inclusion of a new CED software pump  controller, Thermistor and wiring loom. The Fan speed cooling mode is increased from the thermistor temperature signal and is operated at full Fan speed for the duration of the cleaning mode, via the Fan VDP Solenoid. Any electrical fault and the fan will revert to full fan speed, as default.

Cleanfix fans can be mounted to any train fleets.

TRAIN VEHICLE INTERFACE.

The reversible fan systems automatically cleans radiators only when trains are in motion. This is achieved by an interlock with the vehicle low-speed relay, ensuring fan reversing events cannot occur below 5 mph, protecting passengers stood on platforms and maintenance staff on depot.

A 24vDC electronic controller manages the reversing event time with minimal amps utilised and is configurable to operational diagrams. System control can be achieved by utilizing a new hydrostatic controller.

Fan blade reversal is pneumatic (7 Bar minimum) or Hydraulic supply (40 Bar maximum) and  requires this supply from the vehicle.

The air supply required is 7 bar with a low consumption rate. To mitigate loss of vehicle air in the event of failure, an air fuse can be incorporated if required. The fan blade reversal is spring returned so in the vent of a system failure or air loss; the default fan blade position ensures the standard air flow direction is maintained.

COMPONENT MODIFICATION.

The existing cooling fans are replaced with new reverse pitch fan.

The fan mounting bracketry is renewed to accommodate the new reverse pitch fan utilising the existing mounting arrangements and space envelope with the existing fan motor.

Utilising the Cleanfix Flex-tips fans, the fans can be mounted to any existing Radiator cowling.

The fan cowling is renewed to accommodate the new reverse pitch fan, and to ensure air flow is contained and maximised. Semi- rigid fan blade tips ensure the gap between the fan blades and the cowling is minimized increasing airflow by 8% to 15%.

Flexible hose alterations may be required to improve routing and security.

NEW DMU FLEETS (POST 17X).

The later train models are designed with a more advanced hydraulic and software interfaced cooling pack technology and can be supplied with multiple cooling fan operation. The Cleanfix fan interfaces simply into the existing cooling pack hydraulic hardware, occasionally requiring a new Fan motor support to accommodate the extra weight.

A new Fan mount is required adapting the new fan interface with the existing fan motor.

Operation of the fan cleaning mode can be Pneumatic or hydraulic, dependant on accessibility, but usually hydraulic is the preferred client option, to keep the operating system within the cooling pack.

The Fan timer control and hydraulic telemetry can be integrated within the original software, via OEM support or Flotec offer bespoke controls that seamlessly interface with existing electronic systems. These utilise existing LSR controls or GPS signalling whilst simply interfacing into the  existing electrical circuit of the vehicle.

COMPLIANT WITH RAILWAY STANDARDS..

The electronic equipment complies with EN 50121 Railway EMC Standards.

Standard fan blades are manufactured from Glass Reinforced Plastic but can be manufactured from an EN45545 railway fire compliant material if required.

Flexible hose solutions compliant to EN45545 Fire Protection on Railway vehicles.

All wiring compliant to EN45545 Fire Protection on Railway.
